Buying land in Langkawi Total: 6 Posts | 5 Replies | 418284 Views

I visited Langkawi many times in the last few years and I plan to stay in Langkawi long term. I have sold my house in Australia and have the cash to buy one here. I found that not many choice available for me other than the expensive condos or houses being peddled by the developers. They are not worth that price. I was thinking of buying a piece of land and build my own house. Having learned that most of the land in Langkawi is Malay Reserve Land, I may have to re-consider this option. I know that many people  have a long term lease on the land. Anyone has any opinions? Thanks in Advance. Rudi

Rudi, I in the MM2H business and I have a few clients going into a long term leave for the land (say like 20 years). That is the best that you can do if you like the land. Go through a reputable lawyer and make sure that all the documentation are correct. However, do not that you still have to return the land to them as you cannot own Malay Reserve Land. Only the Malays are allowed to own the land.  You can build your house as to what you like but it wll never be under your name. However, many of my clients like it this way as they want to stay in a place where they have designed. Good luck to you
